A total of 34 projects led by UBC researchers were awarded $9.1 million in funding.

Dr. Friedrich M. Götz received funding from Canada Foundation for Innovation’s John R. Evans Leaders Fund (JELF) for the Personality and Geographical Ambiance (PANGEA) Lab: A Locally-rooted Globally-connected Big-data Research Hub.

Dr. Götz, an assistant professor in UBC’s Department of Psychology, studies geographical psychology and the causes and consequences of regional personality differences. Dr. Götz pursues an interdisciplinary Big Data approach that seeks to combine classic interactionist theories from social and personality psychology with an applied behavioural science perspective and consequential real-world outcomes. This funding supports his lab’s research goals.

“The whole PANGEA lab team and I are honoured and humbled by the generous financial support of the Canadian Foundation for Innovation. This funding is of critical importance to us and our mission as it will allow us to transform our rooms into a modern lab with cutting-edge workstations, state-of-the-art web conferencing facilities, and a personal and inviting shared community space. From there, we will be conducting our research at the nexus of personality, culture, and geography with colleagues and collaborators from near and far. We are grateful for this unique opportunity and excited about the many new opportunities it will create for us and others.”

The aim of the JELF is to help universities more competitively recruit and retain outstanding researchers by helping acquire the state-of-the-art labs, equipment, and facilities they need to make discoveries that will have an impact on Canadians.

“Canada is world-renowned for our state-of-the-art institutions and talented researchers. Through this Fund, our government is strengthening our leadership and competitive advantage by supporting Canadians to pursue discoveries, overcome challenges, and innovate to make a more prosperous, equitable, and sustainable future for all.”
