NOWCAM: Where research meets revelry

Members of the Department of Psychology’s Cognitive Science area recently attended the 27th Annual North West Cognition and Memory Conference (NOWCAM) at the University of Victoria.

NOWCAM brings together cognitive scientists and student researchers from departments across the Pacific Northwest to exchange ideas related to memory and cognition. The conference provides emerging researchers with valuable opportunities to present their work in a supportive and inclusive setting.

The UBC contingent included UBC Psychology faculty Dr. Hee-Yeon Im, Dr. Joan Ongchoco, and Dr. Daniela Palombo, along with undergraduate students, graduate students, postbaccalaureate researchers, and postdoctoral fellows. The conference was a chance for our researchers to present their latest research and connect with colleagues from across the Pacific Northwest.

Undergraduate student researcher Jasmindeep Kaur received an honourable mention for the inaugural D. Stephen Lindsay Award for Best Presentation. Her talk, “Discrete vs. continuous timer bars: How visual segmentation shapes the perception of time ‘running out’”, explored how visual design can alter time perception.

The 2026 NOWCAM Conference will be hosted at the University of British Columbia.

Dr. Daniela Palombo, UBC Psychology Associate Professor and Host of NOWCAM 2026, says, “We’re thrilled to welcome cognitive science researchers from across the Pacific Northwest to Vancouver for another exciting gathering of minds in cognition and memory. Stay tuned for more details!”
