Wonder Kids is a series of virtual talks on the fascinating world of child development, hosted each month through July 2021.
Led by the Directors of UBC’s Early Development Research Group – some of the world’s leading developmental psychologists – we invite you to join the conversation on language, learning and social development!
Speaker:
Dr. Darko Odic, Associate Professor
Topic:
What do babies know about numbers?
Description:
Few developmental milestones seem more difficult for children to master than learning to count. In this talk, Dr. Odic will highlight research showing that even babies and preschoolers have a surprisingly robust understanding of numbers and math, including knowing how to intuitively add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Dr. Odic will also discuss this apparent divide between children’s intuitive understanding of numbers, and their slow learning of mathematics, and how psychologists are working to bridge this gap.
