Times Higher Education: UBC Psychology among the top 10 in the world, 1st in Canada

UBC’s Department of Psychology ranks tenth in the world and first in Canada in the latest prestigious subject rankings released today by Times Higher Education (THE). Following UBC Psychology, the next Canadian psychology department to place was the University of Toronto at 13.
2018 marks the first year Times Higher Education is including psychology as a stand-alone subject. THE recently expanded the number of subject areas used in their rankings and in this expansion psychology became separate from social sciences.
“I’m thrilled to see our department ranked so highly among the world’s best,” says Dr. Geoffrey Hall, professor and department head, UBC Psychology. “It’s clear that we have become an international frontrunner. This ranking reflects the amazing accomplishments of our outstanding faculty, students and staff.”
Hall adds, “That psychology is now a stand-alone subject in the THE rankings speaks to its vital importance to contemporary society.”

According to Duncan Ross, data and analytics director at Times Higher Education, “Psychology always sat uneasily within social sciences – it could equally well have been part of life sciences or clinical and health; allowing it to stand alone resolves a dilemma.”
The 2018 Times Higher Education World University Rankings’ table for psychology subjects employs the same rigorous and balanced range of 13 performance indicators used in the overall World University Rankings, but the methodology has been recalibrated to suit the individual fields. It is a brand new ranking for 2018 and includes 100 institutions.
