UBC Psychology prof. Steven Heine elected as Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada

Dr. Steven Heine is among 89 new Fellows elected into the Royal Society of Canada. The 2016 Fellows have been elected by their peers in recognition of outstanding scholarly, scientific and artistic achievement. Election to the academies of the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) is the highest honour a scholar can achieve in the Arts, Humanities and Sciences.
“I’m thrilled to be elected into the Royal Society of Canada. As I was born and raised in Canada, it’s a particular honour to have my research recognized by my country,” says Heine, Professor, Department of Psychology at UBC. “It’s quite humbling to see the list of the other Fellows in the Society – it is such an accomplished group. I really appreciate Mark Schaller, Alan Kingstone, and my other sponsors for nominating me. I also am grateful for all the students and post-docs who have worked with me and who have contributed to all the research that comes out of my lab.”
Dr. Heine’s pioneering research has challenged key psychological assumptions in self-esteem, meaning, and the ways that people understand genetic constructs. His research on cultural psychology is most noteworthy for aiding the identification of psychological processes that are either universal across humans or are particular to certain cultures. He is the author of many acclaimed journal articles and books in the fields of social and cultural psychology.
He will be formally inducted into the RSC on November 18, in Kingston, Ontario. View the full list of 2016 RSC Fellows.
