Discover how the minds of babies work as they learn more than one language.
Babies’ first words are often seen as a milestone of early development. But enormous development has taken place before the first words are even formed.
Join Dr. Janet Werker, one of the world’s leading developmental psychologists and director of UBC’s Infant Studies Centre, as she explores foundations of language learning, including multi-language acquisition in infancy.
Following the lecture, guests are invited to a light reception and to see Dr. Werker’s research first-hand in UBC’s Living Lab at Science World.
Dr. Janet Werker is the recipient of the 2015 Gold Medal Award from the Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), the highest honour bestowed by the organization, in recognition of the pioneering discoveries Dr. Werker has made in early childhood language acquisition. She is also a Canada Research Chair in Psychology at the University of British Columbia.
In honour of Dr. Werker’s 2015 SSHRC Gold Medal Award, the Department of Psychology and the Faculty of Arts are hosting this special public lecture in recognition of her significant achievements.
