MA student Vasileia Karasavva receives prestigious Vanier Scholarship

Join us in congratulating Vasileia Karasavva on receiving a 2023 Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship.

The Government of Canada launched the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) program in 2008 to strengthen Canada’s ability to attract and retain world-class doctoral students and establish Canada as a global center of excellence in research and higher learning. Vanier Scholars demonstrate leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences, and/or engineering and health.

Vasileia, a clinical psychology masters student at UBC, received this award to support her PhD research project ‘Bystanders as cycle-breakers: A longitudinal exploration of the role of bystanders in halting the perpetuation of cyber aggression.’

“I am thrilled and honoured to be one of the 2023 Vanier Scholars. This funding will make a tangible difference in my life and support my research on digital interactions. I am excited to delve deeper into understudied yet so important research areas, like consent in digitally mediated sexual encounters and technology-facilitated sexual violence.”

Across Canada, 166 doctoral students received the Vanier CGS. The Vanier CGS program awards up to $50,000 per year for three years to students working in social sciences and humanities, natural sciences, engineering and health. Scholarships are distributed equally between the three federal granting agencies: Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

“Congratulations to these talented recipients from all across the country who are doing the groundbreaking work that will contribute not only to Canada’s health and well-being but also to the world’s. Through this funding, the Government of Canada is investing in the next generation of researchers and inspiring them to continue to think outside the box and tackle the challenges of today and tomorrow.”
