Three UBC Psychology undergraduate students were recognized as Laureates of the CPA 2024 Certificate of Academic Excellence award.
The Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) Certificate of Excellence recognizes outstanding achievements and theses made by students at all levels of study in each Canadian department of psychology.
Psychology Honours students Luke Forrester, Liam Gorsuch, and Cal Rosete, along with MA and PhD students, received CPA’s 2024 Certificate of Academic Excellence awards. This award is a testament to our students’ hard work and creativity. We are proud of all they have accomplished!

Luke Forrester graduated with an Honours BA in Psychology in May 2024. Luke’s area of research interest is in social psychology, intergroup relations, social justice allyship, and social determinants of health. Luke has worked with the Emotion and Self Lab in his fourth year and the Social Health Lab in his third year.

Liam Gorsuch is graduating with a BA Honours in Psychology this November. Liam’s areas of research interest include forensic psychology, corrections, recidivism and violence prevention, risk assessment, and concurrent disorders. He is affiliated with the Nicholls Lab and the B.R.A.I.N. Lab. Liam’s fourth-year honours thesis was titled Exploring the Association Between Substance Misuse and Suicidality Among People Entering Prison.
“I am incredibly grateful to Dr. Tonia Nicholls and Dr. Amanda Butler for their guidance and mentorship in this work and beyond, and to the UBC Psychology Honours program for providing such high-quality instruction over the past two years. It is a privilege to be a 2024 Certificate of Academic Excellence Laureate, and I look forward to continuing to work toward meaningful advancements in our understanding of custodial and forensic populations.”
Cal Rosete is entering their first year in MSc Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at UBC and previously graduated from BSc Honours Behavioural Neuroscience at UBC in May 2024. Cal’s research primarily lies in the field of behavioural neuroscience, with Microglia, the brain’s immune cells, being at the centre of their research interests. Cal seeks to understand how the immune system contributes to the onset and development of mood disorders, such as major depressive disorder. They have been working with the Ciernia Lab for the past two years.
