Join us in congratulating psychology graduate Robin Richardson, who earned the Governor General’s Silver Medal in Arts. The Medals are the most prestigious award students in Canadian schools can receive.
Robin graduated with an Honours in Psychology and was presented with the award at UBC’s May 2016 convocation ceremonies for psychology. She has been the recipient of numerous other awards at UBC including the Premier Undergraduate and Wesbrook Scholarships.
When asked what it means to receive this award, Robin credits the role her parents played in her overall education. “I was surprised and honoured to receive the Governor General’s award this year. Receiving it has made me reflect on my roots,” says Richardson. “My parents have always made my education a priority and have spent many hours teaching me to read, helping me with my book reports, and quizzing me on my cranial nerves. I am so grateful for that. It was an incredible experience to have my parents at my convocation, watching President Piper present me with the award.”
For Robin, this award affirms that she is on the right career path. “I was very fortunate to find a subject that I’m good at and that I love,” says Richardson. “Nothing would make me happier than to continue doing psychology-related work for the rest of my career.”
This fall Robin is headed to the University of Windsor to pursue graduate studies in her dream program, Clinical Neuropsychology. She’ll receive co-supervision; in one lab she will be focusing on concussions and their affective and cognitive consequences, and in another lab she’ll be focusing on pediatric neuropsychology.

About the Medals

For more than 140 years, the Governor General’s Academic Medals have recognized the outstanding scholastic achievements of students in Canada. They are awarded to the student graduating with the highest average from high school, as well as from approved college or university programs. The Medals are awarded at four distinct levels: Bronze at the secondary school level; Collegiate Bronze at the post-secondary, diploma level; Silver at the undergraduate level; and Gold at the graduate level. Medals are presented on behalf of the Governor General by participating educational institutions, along with personalized certificates signed by Governor General David Johnston.
