Are you an international student from India and interested in language development research? 
The Infant Studies Centre in the UBC Department of Psychology, directed by Dr. Janet F. Werker, is seeking an international undergraduate student to fill a paid Research Assistant (RA) position for Summer 2018. The successful candidate will assist with a research project about infant speech perception and work closely with the local South Asian population in both community and research settings.
The RA will recruit Hindi-speaking families from local community venues to participate with their infants (6-12 months old) in a language development research study, as well as reach out to families by phone and email. The RA will receive one-on-one mentorship from both Dr. Werker and the Centre’s Research Manager and will write a literature review to demonstrate their understanding of the project. The RA will be encouraged to pursue opportunities to publish in undergraduate research journals and/or to participate in undergraduate research conferences.
Compensation: $16/hour for up to 18 hrs/week from May 1st through August 15th, 2018.
The ideal applicant:

  • Is an international student from India, currently enrolled at UBC in 2nd, 3rd or 4th year.
  • Is fluent in spoken Hindi (or similar language such as Urdu) – ability to read/write Hindi (or similar language) is an asset.
  • Was registered in at least 9 credits at UBC in both previous terms of the 2017/18 Winter Session.
  • Has an overall academic average of at least 75%.
  • Is motivated to pursue research in the fields of Linguistics, Speech Sciences,
  • Developmental Psychology and/or Language Acquisition.
