Pets of UBC Psych: Deano

Ian with a dressed-up Deano.

Deano is a friendly 4 year old Basenji mix who is loyal to his human Ian Josephson, an undergraduate psychology student at the University of British Columbia.

Approaching strangers, Deano would offer his friendship by circling around and presenting his backside for you to pet. Strangely, however, this is also how he “apologizes” when he knows he has done something wrong. He seems to think this can get him out of trouble!

Ian recounts a fun story with Deano on his first couple of times by the shore:

“On his first few beach excursions, Deano was afraid of the water and wouldn’t go in, though he was clearly conflicted given all the fun everyone but him was having. It was funny watching him experience “dognitive dissonance” trying to reconcile his mistrust in the waves with his desire to answer everyone’s calls to come in. Eventually he was ok with being picked up and put in shallow water, but his own efforts would only bring him as close as the meeting point between a receding wave and an incoming one, which would quickly chase him back to dry sand.”

Some of Deano’s nicknames include: Von Pupperkins, Pops Mcgillicutty, Deans, and Deanzel Washington!

Ian adopted Deano from the Save Elephant Foundation: Elephant Nature Park Dog Sanctuary, which aims to find homes for rescued dogs, and will even assist in transporting them internationally.
