In this Q&A, the presidential team share their research–and what they’re up to when they aren’t teaching, researching, studying, or organizing the GSC events.
What’s your role on the GSC?
JC: Co-president
JB: One of the three Co-presidents. I think I will mainly be responsible for securing liquor licenses and authorization for the monthly Beer-on-the-Head (BOH). I’m sure we will delegate other duties as they come up.
BG: Co-president
What does 2016/17 bring for the GSC?
JB: More of the same, really. We will probably need to start actively recruiting graduate student bartenders since we no longer have Ben Cheung.
JC: More fun social events
BG: We don’t have any extra events planned this year, but we’re open to suggestions!
What area are you in?
JC: Developmental
JB: Quantitative Methods
BG: Clinical
Any research are you working on?
JC: My research focuses on how young infants acquire different categories of words and the nature of this early word understanding. One of my current projects examines how children learn that their pet’s name (e.g. Fido) extends only to that individual and that their pet’s category label (e.g. Dog) extends to other members of that category.
JB: My research mostly relates to measurement invariance (ensuring that psychological measures behave similarly when applied to different groups or repeatedly over time). Right now I’m working on methods to quantify the impact of violations to measurement invariance to supplement the traditional tests of statistical significance.
BG: I’m working on my dissertation, looking at how people with social anxiety remember positive events.
What do you do for fun?
JC: For fun I like to go climbing, running and play video games.
JB: I go to a lot of small venue concerts and love skiing in the winter. Lately myself and a few others in the department have gotten into obstacle course races like the Tough Mudder, etc. The department has a team running in The Insane Inflatable 5k in October. If anyone reading this is interested in joining feel free to get in touch.
BG: Riding my horse.
What’s your motto or favourite quote?
JC: When in doubt, just take the next small step.
JB: “I love you like Kanye loves Kanye.”
BG: “Come to BOH!”
Speaking of BOH, the GSC is kicking the semester off with their annual September BBQ and BOH. The festivities begin at 4:30pm on Thursday, September 8 in the Suedfeld Lounge (Kenny 2510). They’re serving up free refreshments and food–and it’s a chance to meet new members of our department.
If you’re interested in getting involved, the GSC needs a team of volunteers to help with the BBQ. If you’re able to volunteer email: gsc_events[at]psych.ubc.ca
