Dr. Joelle LeMoult, assistant professor in the Department of Psychology, was awarded funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI). This funding, provided through the CFI’s John R. Evans Leaders Fund (JELF), will support laboratory infrastructure for The Depression and Stress Lab.
The Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science, announced that the Government of Canada is investing more than $52 million in 220 new infrastructure projects at 51 universities across Canada. The funding will allow researchers from around the country to carry out ground-breaking research in world-class facilities.
The Depression and Stress Lab works to better understand the onset, presentation, and course of depression and anxiety disorders in adolescents and adults.”We are particularly interested in why some individuals experience depression and anxiety in response to stress and why others do not,” says Dr. LeMoult. “Funding from the CFI will provide the space and resources needed for us to conduct this work. In addition, it will support our commitment to advancing the understanding of the onset, maintenance, and treatment of depression and anxiety—with the ultimate goal of benefiting the millions of Canadians who are suffering from these costly disorders.”
“State-of-the-art equipment and facilities play a central role in ensuring the new generation of researchers can make breakthrough discoveries and fuel Canadian innovation. These facilities will also act as magnets for international collaborations and for the recruitment of the best students and post-doctoral fellows from around the world.”
