Dr. Jiaying Zhao joins a new international consortium to create innovative methods to value earth observations in order to serve science and society.
The Collaborative Network for Valuing Earth Information (CONVEI) consortium includes National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the United States Geological Survey (USGS), and is led by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The collaboration brings together expertise from different disciplines, including educators, economists, humanitarians, and psychologists.
“I’m extremely honoured to be part of this consortium and I look forward to exploring how earth information can be used to guide decision making to advance human and planetary well-being.”
CONVEI will use Earth data to inform decisions and the collaboration will bring new perspectives to understanding how Earth observations can change perceptions, behaviours, and decisions and influence social and ecological outcomes.
Dr. Zhao (she/her), a behavioural scientist in UBC’s department of psychology and Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability, uses psychological principles to design behavioural interventions to promote actions to mitigate climate change, increase recycling and composting rates, and encourage biodiversity conservation actions.
