Raymond Scott Corteen
It is with great sadness that we report Raymond Scott Corteen, professor emeritus of psychology at UBC, passed away on February 26, 2017.
Dr. Corteen came to the Department of Psychology in 1968 from the University of Edinburgh, where he earned his PhD. Prior to his graduate studies in Scotland, he served as a military officer in the UK. He retired as a member of UBC’s Quarter Century Club in 1997.
“He was a good teacher and was well loved by both graduate and undergraduate students,” said Stanley Coren, professor emeritus in the department of psychology. “He served the department well during the time when we were building and strengthening and becoming the world-class department that we are now.”
Dr. Corteen was one of the founding members of the cognition area in the department and provided leadership on many departmental committees; ultimately helping to establish our undergraduate curriculum. His research focused on the influence of television on reading and theoretical issues in the area of thought and language.
The UBC Psychology community extends its deepest sympathy to the loved ones of Dr. Corteen. We were privileged to have known him as a friend and dedicated colleague.
In honour and in remembrance of Dr. Corteen, the British Columbia and the University of British Columbia flags on UBC’s Vancouver campus were flown at half-mast on March 28, 2017.
