SSHRC Explore Grant/Arts Research – Fall 2018 Out of Cycle Program
The grant provides support to faculty in need of seed funding for collaborative research and for small projects. SSHRC Explore Grants provide research funding of up to $4,000. This is an additional out of cycle competition due to available funding this year. Successful applicants to the March 1, 2018 SSHRC Explore Grant/Arts Research Program are NOT eligible for this competition.
More information can be found here or contact pam.forsberg@ubc.ca . Applications should be submitted electronically by October 1, 2018 and questions addressed to the Dean of Arts Office, Research Grants Facilitator (pam.forsberg@ubc.ca) or Matthew Evenden, ADR (matthew.evenden@ubc.ca).
Call for Proposals for Research Equipment, Software and Tools
The Vice-President Research & Innovation will support a one-time adjudicated competition drawing on the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) General Research Fund (GRF) to support researchers’ equipment, software and tools costs in any SSHRC discipline in Arts. These SSHRC GRD grants will be for one-year and budgets may range up to $25,000.
Requests may be made for:
- tools, software and equipment to support research
- training costs for researchers and students to use tools, software and equipment
- materials, supplies and minor equipment upgrades essential to the operation and maintenance of existing research infrastructure
- salaries of technical and professional research support staff employed to operate and maintain equipment and tools, including software and websites
Researchers in Arts are invited to submit a current UBC CV and a proposal [up to a maximum of 2 pages] that describes:
- the research supported by the request;
- the use of the tools/software/equipment by the Principal Investigator, students and colleagues;
- a budget and justification for the requested funds.
All requests must comply with Tri-Agency eligibility rules. This competition will not consider requests for personal computers. These grants are intended to support research by individual researchers or groups in SSHRC-eligible research areas. Further:
- the lead applicant must currently hold [or have held in the past 10 years] Tri-Council funding;
- the project to be supported must not currently have other significant resources at its disposal. For example, a CFI facility with more than 20% left in its IOF would be considered ineligible;
An Arts committee will review applications and make decisions based on evidence of an active research program supported by the tools, software or equipment; or a demonstrated need for support.
Applications should be submitted electronically as a single PDF by October 30, 2018, and questions directed to the Dean of Arts Office, Research Grants Facilitator (pam.forsberg@ubc.ca) or Matthew Evenden, ADR (matthew.evenden@ubc.ca).
Equipment purchases must be made or funds committed by March 31,2019.
Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) John R. Evans Leaders Fund (JELF)

Applicants will have to apply for an additional 40% through the provincial BC Knowledge Development Fund (BCKDF) program, and an additional 20% will need to be raised through equipment discounts or other sources of cash or in-kind contributions.
- Further information on applying to CFI is available on the UBC Institutional Programs Office website.
