These awards recognize and support the next generation of research at UBC and across Canada. Nearly 5,762 scholarships and fellowships have been awarded for research training, including 245 master’s students, and 160 doctoral students from UBC.

Canada Graduate Scholarship – Master’s Program
The Canada Graduate Scholarship – Master’s (CGSM) program provides financial support to high-caliber scholars who are engaged in an eligible master’s or, in some cases, doctoral program in Canada.
The 2023 recipients are:

- Ruoning Li
- Andres Montiel
This support allows these scholars to fully concentrate on their studies in their chosen fields. Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) support and promote high-quality research in a wide variety of disciplines and areas, which are divided into broad fields of research. This includes research that bridges two or more disciplines or that requires the skills of several disciplines.
Canada Graduate Scholarships—Doctoral Program
The Canada Graduate Scholarships — Doctoral (CGS D) program is a federal program of scholarships administered by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). Scholarships are awarded through national competitions by these three granting agencies.

The CGS D program supports and promotes research excellence in a wide variety of disciplines and broad fields of natural sciences and engineering, health and social sciences and humanities, including interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research. This support allows scholars to concentrate on their doctoral studies more fully, to seek out the best research mentors in their chosen fields and to contribute to the Canadian research ecosystem during and beyond the tenure of their awards.
NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships – Doctoral Program
The NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships – Doctoral (PGS D) provides financial support to high calibre scholars who are engaged in a doctoral program in the natural sciences or engineering.
The recipient is Mudi Zhao
This support allows scholars to concentrate more fully on their studies and seek out the best research mentors in their chosen fields both within Canada and abroad.
SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships
SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships support high-caliber students engaged in doctoral programs in the social sciences and humanities.
The recipient is: Carmelle Bareket-Shavit
This support allows scholars to fully focus on their doctoral studies, seek out the best research mentors in their chosen fields, and contribute to the Canadian research ecosystem during and beyond the tenure of their awards.
