Highlights: Spring 2018 graduating class

This spring almost 500 psychology students will cross the stage at the Chan Centre to receive their degrees. With ages ranging from twenty to the mid-fifties, the graduating class came from all over the world with a shared purpose: to earn their psychology degree from UBC.

Over the past year, our undergraduate students grew connections and got to know each other a little bit better. Jenn Lin, who graduates on May 25, turned her lens on the people in the psychology community and built a sense of community by creating Humans of UBC Psych. The Psychology Students’ Association hosted numerous events to bring the psychology community together. These events ranged from career nights—to a mental health and wellbeing workshop—to faculty student socials.

Our students came out in droves to present their research at the 20th Psychology Undergraduate Research Conference (PURC). Scores of students either participated or volunteered in our research labs and some led student-directed seminars. Emma Ward-Griffin, a research assistant in the Social Health Lab, published new research showing how therapy dog sessions have a measurable, positive effect on the wellbeing of university students, particularly on stress reduction and feelings of negativity.

The 2018 class speaker, Katherine Moore, received the ‘Wesbrook Scholar’ award—one of the most prestigious awards for undergraduate students at UBC—and the ‘Outstanding Leadership in the UBC Community and Beyond’ award from UBC’s faculty of arts. Moore was chosen to represent her psychology peers at the convocation ceremony on May 25. As the speaker, she will reflect on her experiences at UBC and speak on behalf of the class of 2018.

We celebrate each one our graduates, their accomplishments, and their futures.

Tuum Est. The day is yours!
