PhD student Gabrielle Ibasco honoured with prestigious Vanier Scholarship
August 11, 2025
Join us in congratulating Gabrielle Ibasco, who received a 2025 Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship.
Gabrielle, a social-psychology PhD student, received this prestigious award to support her research project on the relationship between group-based emotions and prejudice.
Gabrielle is interested in examining how moral emotions and ideologies underlie group processes, intergroup relations, and social justice movements. In research with Dr. Jessica Tracy, she is investigating how group-based emotions such as pride, guilt, and shame could be functional for intergroup reconciliation.
“It's an honour to receive the Vanier Graduate Scholarship, and to represent UBC's Psychology Department among a diverse group of awardees. With the generous funding from this scholarship, I am excited to continue my research examining how self-conscious emotions could be harnessed to increase support for equality and justice—within Canada, and beyond. These topics are timely, and I hope that my research could shed insight into how emotions might be leveraged to address important societal issues.”
The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS) program awards up to $50,000 per year for three years to outstanding students who demonstrate academic excellence, research potential, and leadership.
