The prerequisite for admission to the PhD program is an MA or MSc degree in Psychology. Students who obtain their MA at UBC must apply for admission to the PhD; they are not automatically admitted. Students who have Master’s degrees from other universities are normally admitted fully to the PhD program. Occasionally a student may be admitted provisionally. After successfully completing the first year, these students are then admitted fully to the PhD program. Students with non-psychology Master’s degrees may be eligible for provisional status at the Department’s discretion.
High quality MA thesis research is the major prerequisite for admission to the PhD program. In addition, students in the Clinical Program need to have demonstrated sufficient professional and clinical skills. Clinical students must develop an acceptable level of clinical skill and serve a one-year internship in an approved applied setting. Students are encouraged to complete their doctoral degree in four years.
Complete PhD Program Requirements can be found in the Graduate Student Handbook.
