The prerequisite for admission to the PhD program is an MA or MSc degree in Psychology. Students who obtain their MA at UBC must apply for admission to the PhD; they are not automatically admitted. Students who have master’s degrees in Psychology from other recognized universities are normally admitted fully to the PhD program. Occasionally a student may be admitted provisionally. After successfully completing the first year, these students are then admitted fully to the PhD program. Students with non-Psychology master’s degrees may be eligible for provisional status at the Department’s discretion.
High-quality master’s thesis research is the major prerequisite for admission to the PhD program. In addition, applicants for doctoral studies in the Clinical Program need to have demonstrated sufficient professional and clinical skills.
Details on the PhD program degree requirements can be found in the Graduate Student Handbook.
